Teaching curriculum

Mathematics

The following Courses are being taught

  • Standard mathematics

    • Students are taught appropriate grade-level mathematics based on California standards and benchmarks. Specific mathematics goals are met at the end of each grade level.

  • Creative Mathematics

    • Students use their math foundations and apply them to projects they create. This allows them to see real life applications of the math processes they learn.

 

The basic purpose of this

  • To help pupils build up basic necessary mathematical concepts and skills.

  • To help pupils build up problem-solving skills and mathematical thinking.

  • To help pupils build up a positive attitude towards mathematics.

  • To help produce creative work arising from mathematical ideas.

 

Health & Physical Education

The basic purpose of this is to understand and apply the concepts to:

  • Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness

  •  Responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity

  • Demonstrate an understanding of effective warm-up techniques

  • Know elements to maintain and promote personal health.

    • Students learn how to play a variety of sports properly

    • Students participate in weekly biking outings.

    • Students are led in daily physical exercise in which they track their progress on a variety of activities including running, stretching, and jumping.

 

English Language

The basic purpose of this English teaching course layout is to develop;

  • The rudimentary skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing

  • The development of effective communication skills in English

The above two aims will be achieved through the following course design;

Part 1: - Listening and Speaking

  • Oral/Speech Work

  •  Conversation

Part 2: - Grammar

  • Correct usage of grammar elements.

  • Writing complete and complex sentences.

  • The correct and effective use of spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.

Part 3: - Reading

  • Silent Reading

  • Reading Aloud

  • Reading Comprehension section

  • Summary Writing

Part 4: - Composition

  • Narrative and Descriptive Writing

  • Letter Writing

  • Response to current event writing

  • Research-based writing

  • Guided Summary Work 

Part 5: - Literature 

  • Novels

  • Fiction and Nonfiction short stories 

  • Drama

  • Poetry

Part 6: - Spelling

  • Define and spell grade-level sight words

 

Science

The focus of teaching science course is threefold enhancing basic understanding, enhancing their skills and focus on ethics and attitudes using a 5E method to engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate.

Enhancing understanding of:

  • Basic scientific phenomena, Basic ideas in Physical science, Life science, Scientific Inquiry

Enhance their skills

  • Observation skills

  • Inference skills

  • Comparison Skills

  • Communication Skills

  • Evaluation Skills

  • Critical thinking skills

Ethics and Attitudes

  • Develop Curiosity

  • Develop Creativity

  • Develop Open-mindedness

*Students are taught a variety of scientific topics based off of the standards and benchmarks of California for their appropriate grade level.

 

Social Studies

The focus and goals of teaching social studies to the students are to enable them:

  • Create a better understanding of our roles and responsibilities in society.

  • Create a better understanding of the relationship between people and the environment.

  • Create a better understanding of other cultures and societies and appreciate cultural diversity.

  • Create a better understanding of our own history and culture.

  • Create a better understanding and curiosity to learn more about the world we live in;

-In grades 1-3, students are taught about a variety of world cultures and communities, both their present and past.

-In grade 4, students are taught the concepts of geography and an understanding of economics.

In grades 5-6, students are taught about the various cultures and kingdoms of the ancient world.

 

Form Drawing

  • An art class that aids in the development of children's fine motor skills, which aids in their writing. It is used as a tool to work on a child's temperament. It helps to develop a basic sense of geometric forms.

Calligraphy

  • Calligraphy is part of the Chinese culture and heritage thus it is included in our curriculum so children can appreciate the beauty of the Chinese characters. Learning calligraphy requires patience which makes it a character and personality building tool for the students.
